This is a classic but little known dish that combines elements of Portuguese and Goan cookery, Goa being the Portuguese colony in India. It uses Pó de Caril, Portuguese curry powder, itself ulimately derived from Goa.

500g (1 lb) minced (ground) beef
1 tbsp breadcrumbs
2 tbsp coriander (cilantro), chopped
2 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, sliced
4 fresh curry leaves
1 tomato, chopped
Salt and freshly-ground black pepper to taste
2 tbsp vinegar
5 tbsp curry powder (preferably
Portuguese curry powder)
500ml (2 cups) water
Method:
Mix the minced beef with 3 tbsp of the curry powder until well mixed. Add the breadcrumbs, coriander leaves (cilantro) and season with salt and black pepper.
Mix well to combined then form the mixture into medium-sized meatballs. Set aside to firm up for 10 minutes.
Heat the oilve oil in a frying pan and when hot use to fry the onion for about 6 minutes until caramelized. Add the curry leaves and fry until darkened then scatter over and stir in the remaining curry powder.
Stir in the tomato and fry for a few minutes until softened then add the water and vinegar and bring the ingredients to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes over low heat.
Add in the meatballs and continue cooking for about 10 minutes, until they're cooked through.
