Succulent and simple, this Diner-style dish is the only beef burger recipe you'll ever need. Serve with fries and a good dollop of ketchup, for the ultimate American diner experience. This is counted as one of America's national dishes.
Ingredients:
For The Burger:
500g good-quality steak mince (ground beef)
1/2 small onion, finely chopped
1 medium egg
1/2 tbsp Dijon mustard
100g fresh white breadcrumbs
2 tbsp sunflower oil
8 cheddar cheese slices
4 burger buns
To Serve, Optional
little gem lettuce leaves
tomato slices gherkin spears
Method:
Put the mince into a large bowl and mix in the chopped onion, egg, mustard, breadcrumbs and plenty of seasoning. Divide the mixture equally into 4 and shape each portion into a flattened patty. Arrange the burgers on a plate, cover and chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes so that they have a chance to firm up a little.
Pre-heat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan) mark 6. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat and fry the burgers for 4 minutes per side, turning midway through, until each side is well browned. Transfer to a baking tray and lay a slice of cheese on top of each patty. Cook in the oven for 12 minutes, adding another slice of cheese to each after 6 minutes.
Meanwhile, toast the buns. Check to make sure the burgers are cooked through and serve in the buns, topped with lettuce leaves, tomato slices and a gherkin spear, if you like.
Serve with fries and your favourite sauces (typically ketchup, but I prefer hot sauce).
