This is really more about decoration than the cupcake itself. Bake your favourite cupcake batter and use the method outlined here to decorate them like Christmas baubles. Insert a wire into the tops of these cupcakes and they can be hung on the Christmas tree, or use them as a decorative and edible table centrepiece.

The key to the decoration is to bake the cupcakes in reflective foil cases.

Ingredients:

your favourite cupcake batter
reflective foil baking cases
white and coloured fondant icing, rolled out about 6mm (1/4 in) thick
red sugar crystals
dragée balls
edible silver metallic lustre dust

Method:

Bake the cupcake batter in the foil baking cases. Allow to cool then cover the tops with 6.5cm (2 1/2 in) white fondant circles.

Use pastry (cookie) cutters to cut decorations from the coloured fondant. Brush the tops of the cupcakes with water and sprinkle over the red sugar crystals before decorating with the dragée balls.

For Christmas: use white fondant to shape crooks around a finger tip. Wrap around a thin strip of red fondant to make banding. Affix to your cupcakes. For Easter form bunnies or chicks with fondant icing and use these to decorate the cupcakes

Use as seasonal table centrepieces. These are particularly good for Christmas as they look like baubles.
