Ingredients:
1 batch devil's food cake mix (or 540g box of shop-bought)
oil or butter for greasing
For the Glaze:
700g icing sugar, sifted
7 tbsp milk, about
To Decorate:
180g icing sugar, sifted
45g cocoa powder
2 tbsp milk
black jelly beans
liquorice shoestrings
Method:
Prepare the cake according to the recipe (or the packet directions) and divide between two 20cm diameter cake tins (grease these beforehand). Transfer to an oven pre-heated to 170°C and bake for about 30 minutes, or until the cakes are lightly browned and cooked through (a skewer inserted into the centre of the cakes will emerge cleanly). Once done, remove from the oven and allow to cool in the tins for 10 minutes before turning out onto wire racks to cool completely.
In the meantime sift the icing sugar for the glaze into a bowl. Add just enough milk to give a spreadable consistency then evenly spread a thin layer of this mix over the top of each cake.
Now combine the icing sugar and cocoa powder for the decoration in a small bowl. Add enough milk to give you a piping consistency then spoon the mixture into a piping bag fitted with a thin, round nozzle (or spoon into a plastic bag and snip off one corner) then use to pipe concentric rings onto the top of each cake. Now pipe straight lines form the centre to the outside of the cake so that you have the semblance of a spider's web.
Finally use the black jelly beans and six lengths of liquorice each to dot the tops of the cakes with 'spiders'.
