Amish Apple Grunt is a traditional American recipe (from the Pennsylvania Dutch community) for a classic dessert of a sponge-type cake made with buttermilk that has apple slices baked in the batter and which has a crumb mix scattered on top before baking. The full recipe is presented here and I hope you enjoy this classic American version of: Amish Apple Grunt.
Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy then add the eggs and mix thoroughly. Blend the flour, salt and baking powder together then add to the egg mixture and stir to combine. Meanwhile mix the soda and vanilla with the milk before adding to the flour mix.
Add the apple slices, stir then pour the batter into a buttered baking dish. Meanwhile mix the sugar, flour, cinnamon and butter with your fingers until you get a crumb-like mix. Sprinkle this over the apple batter then place in an oven pre-heated to 180°C (350°F/Gas Mark 4) and bake for about 40 minutes, or until set and golden brown.
