Falafel (Arabic: فلافل; Hebrew: פלאפל) is a popular Middle Eastern street food. It is a fried ball or patty made from spiced broad beans and/or chickpeas. It is a popular form of fast food in the Levant and in the Mashriq (Arab East), where it is also served as a mezze (snack). The word "falafel" is the plural of the Arabic word فلفل (filfil), meaning pepper.

Traditionally it is served as a sandwich wrapped in pita bread, and the term "falafel" commonly refers to this sandwich. It is also a popular food in Egypt and the Sudan where it is known as ta'meya (طعمية).
