Purse-shaped pastries or dumplings are deemed lucky due to their association with money so this is an excellent addition to any New Year or New Year's Eve party or festive meal. A great but simple to prepare dessert that also wishes your guests good fortune for the coming year.
Ingredients:
1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed
flour, for dusting work surface
85g dark chocolate pieces (I usually use flavoured chocolate like orange)
85g butterscotch pieces
one egg, for egg wash
Method:
Thaw the puff pastry then unroll out on a floured work surface. Cut the sheet into quarters to form four squares.
Combine the chocolate and butterscotch pieces in a small bowl.
Place 4 tbsp (about 40g) of the chocolate and butterscotch mixture in the centre of each puff pastry square then brush the edges of the pastry with water.
Bring the corners of each square to the centre, joining them over the top of the filling
Twist to seal and fan out corners of pastry to form a purse shape.
Whisk egg in small bowl — brush this egg wash over pastry in thin layer.
Transfer each purse to a lightly-greased baking tray. Place in the centre of an oven pre-heated to 200C and bake for 15-20 minutes until puffed and golden. Allow to cool slightly before serving (so the hot filling has a chance to cool down).
Purse-shaped items are deemed lucky (due to their association with money) so this is an excellent accompaniment to New Year or New Year's Eve festivities.
