These are a traditional American Halloween treat and very easy to make at home.
Ingredients:
600ml (about) popped popcorn
200g sugar
120ml molasses or light corn syrup (treacle or golden syrup)
1 tbsp butter
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp malt vinegar
Method:
Melt the butter in an enamelled saucepan or casserole then stir in the sugar and syrup (or molasses). Cook until the sugar has dissolved, bring to a boil then continue boiling without stirring until the syrup mixture reaches the Hard Crack Stage (149–154°C as measured on a candy thermometer; will solidify into threads that will shatter at the slightest torsion [sideways pressure]).
Arrange the popcorn in a single layer on a baking tray then take the syrup off the heat and pour over the popcorn. Pour slowly, turning the popcorn so that each kernel is evenly coated. Allow to cool slightly then shape into small balls, pressing well into shape. Wrap each one in greaseproof (waxed) paper and set aside to cool completely.
