What's meant by shelled barley here is pearl barley. This is a thick porridge that takes some time to cook. It should be noted that barley, historically, was the main grain on the Isle of Man so it's hardly surprising that the staple of porridge was made from it.

Ingredients:

2 cups pearl barley
2 tbsp Flour
300ml New Milk, divided
Water, to cover the barley

Method:

Wash the pearl barley, put in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook for 2 hours, until tender (top up the water as needed).

At this point add 250ml of the milk and bring to a simmer. Blend the flour with the remaining mik and stir into the pan. Continue cooking until the mixture just begins to boil.

Take off the heat and serve.
