Monlar Oo Chin Ye Hin (Myanmar Tangy Soup) a Classic Myanmar recipe for a soup of daikon radish in a spicy sauce acidified with tamarind juice.

Ingredients:

1kg daikon (mooli) radish
4 tbsp fish sauce
2 tbsp dried shrimp
6 tbsp vegetable oil
6 tbsp tamarind juice
2 tsp salt (or to taste)
1 tsp ground turmeric
2 tsp hot chilli powder
4 sprigs of coriander (cilantro)
2 onions, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
2 tomatoes, finely chopped

Method:

Peel the daikon radish. Wash well, the cut into small pieces.

Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, chilli powder and ground turmeric. Stir-fry this mixture until aromatic, then add the dried shrimp and tomatoes.

Continue stir-frying the mixture for 4 minutes, then add the daikon radish along with the fish sauce, salt, tamarind juice and 1l water.

Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes, or until the daikon is tender.

Turn into a tureen, garnish with the chopped coriander and serve.

In some versions of this soup, bamboo shoots are added to the dish. You could also prepare a mix of green squash and bamboo shoots in the same manner.
