Samosas (or samoosas as they are known in South Africa) are a Durban staple, a snack found in supermarkets and on street corners. You can find every kind of savoury filling. Which is why I thought that mincemeat might work well with them. I have various recipes for samosa wrappers on this site. And in Durban’s hot and humid December weather the lighter nature of samosa wrappers is more appropriate than sometimes heavy shortcrust pastry. Filo pastry can also be used if you don’t want to make or can’t source samosa wrappers. You can use commercial mincemeat for this or make your own. To both me and my wife commercial South African mincemeat is a little sweet so I make my own. I have various recipes on this site for different mincemeats. If you’re not making your own wrappers then this is a really quick and satisfying seasonal snack.

Ingredients:

450g (1 lb) prepared mincemeat (store-bought or home-made)
50g butter, melted and kept warm
270g (about 6 sheets) samosa wrappers (bought or home-made) or filo pastry
Icing sugar, for dusting

Method:

Pre-heat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan, 360°F, gas mark 6). Arrange the pastry sheets with the short side facing you and, using scissors, cut the stack in 3 vertically, to make long strips. Brush the top 3 strips with melted butter.
Working quickly, put 1 heaped spoonful of mincemeat at the top of the first strip. Fold one corner of the pastry over it to form a triangle, then continue folding alternately left and right to form a triangular package, until you’ve used up all the strip. Repeat with the other strips, brushing with butter before folding.

Arrange on a lightly-greased baking tray and brush each one with more melted butter. Transfer to your pre-heated oven and bake for 15-20 mins, until crisp and golden. Dust with icing sugar and serve warm (reheat later in a low oven if necessary).

I usually serve these with chilled mulled wine (use warm mulled wine or cider in colder climes).
