The young fruit of common mallow is edible, in fact it can be eaten raw and makes an excellent early summer nibble when you're out foraging. As a relative of okra, you can also use the cheeses in some recipes that originally use okra, like this one.

Ingredients:

500g common mallow cheeses
1 tbsp dried kombu (soaked in warm water and thinly sliced)
1 tsp toasted sesame seeds
2 tsp momoya (or Seaweed Relish
1/4 tsp caster sugar (optional)

Method:

Wash the common mallow cheeses thoroughly. Bring a pan of water to a boil and drop in the common mallow cheeses. Cook for about 10 minutes, or until just tender (do not over-cook) then remove the common mallow cheeses with a slotted spoon and refresh by plunging in iced water.

Drain the common mallow cheeses then slice thinly (about 6mm thick). Add to a bowl and combine with all the remaining ingredients then serve as an accompaniment.
