Tinned tomato puree is often used for this, diluted 4:1 (ie 4 tbsp water to 1 tbsp tomato puree) with hot water (you want it the consistency of single cream). However, if you want to make your own, here is a typical British Indian restaurant (BIR) recipe for how to prepare it.

Ingredients
500g (1 lb) pack of tomatoes
120ml (½ cup) of vegetable oil
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp curry mix powder

Method:

Coarsely chop the tomatoes, place in a blender and pulse until you have a coarse puree. Pour into a large frying pan then add the oil, sugar and salt.

Bring to a simmer over high heat and cook for about 10 minutes, or until the paste begins to darken and fry at the edges

Reduce the heat to low and continue to cook for 10 minutes more, until nicely thickened.

Take off the heat and allow to cool. You can either store in the refrigerator for immediate or next-day use. Alternatively freeze in 60ml (1/4 cup) batches for use later.
