Cream together the butter and sugar until pale and creamy. Add the egg and beat well to incorporate. Mix-in the golden syrup then mix all the dry ingredients together and sift into the egg mixture, beating well to ensure it's all incorporated.
Press the mixture into a well-greased square tin and place in an oven pre-heated to 170°C (325°F/Gas Mark 3) and bake for 20–25 minutes. Allow to cool then tip out and ice with white icing.
