American Apple Pie is a traditional American recipe for a classic pie of lightly-spiced apples cooked on an oil pastry base topped with a flour and butter crumb that makes a traditional Thanksgiving dessert. The full recipe is presented here and I hope you enjoy this classic American version of: American Apple Pie.
Begin with the pastry. Combine the 210g plain flour, oil and milk in a bowl. Stir in the sugar and salt then mix until thoroughly blended. Pat the resultant mixture into the base and sides of a 22cm diameter pie dish, ensuring you have an even depth of the crust. Ensure you crimp the dough around the edges of the pan.
In the meantime, combine the 150g sugar, 3 tbsp plain flour, cinnamon and nutmeg in a bowl. Stir to mix then add the apples and toss to coat. Spread this mixture evenly in the prepared pie crust.
Now prepare the topping. Sift the flour into a bowl and stir in the sugar to combine. Dice the butter, add to the bowl and rub into the flour and sugar mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples then place the pie dish on a baking tray.
Transfer to an oven pre-heated to 175°C and bake for about 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apple mixture is bubbling. Allow to cool before slicing and serving.
