English Translation

This is a traditional bread that hails from the end of the 19th century where chemical leavening agents were becoming more common and were being substituted for yeast. Though oat flour/oatmeal is healthy, this is also the time where oats were becoming less common in the diet (when they were being viewed as the starvation flour of the common folk).

Ingredients:

400g (14 oz) wholemeal flour
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
a little sugar and salt
60g (1/2 cup) oatmeal
200ml (1 1/4 cups, about) buttermilk

Method:

Put all the dry ingredients, except the oatmeal, in a large bowl and mix thoroughly. Sift the oatmeal into the bowl over the other ingredients.

Gradually add the buttermilk, mixing all together to make a fairly soft batter. (It should drop off the spoon fairly easily.)

Pour it into a greased, hot frying pan and bake the loaf on both sides over a moderate heat.
